About Lydiard House

Stroll through the wonderful apartments of Lydiard House and marvel at the ornate plasterwork, the original furnishings, photographs and portraits of the St. John family.

Lydiard House is brought to life by audio commentaries, displays and character figures of the St. John family and their servants. Original items continue to be sourced and added to the collections.

Admire the curious 'Blue Closet' which is devoted to the 18 century society artist, Lady Diana Spencer, who shares a common ancestry with the late Princess of Wales.

Lady Diana married into the St. John family and her beautiful wall panels, Wedgewood china incorporating her designs and pictures of her children are a joy to behold.

Over 100 pieces of exquisitley painted glass figures, flowers, tiny flies, even an elephant are on display behind a fascinating painted window by Abraham Vin Linge.

Lydiard House has a magnificent 18 century ornamental fruit and flower walled which has been lovingly restored to it's former glory.

The plans to the garden were based on historical research and archaeological excavation.

Letters written by Lady Johanna St. John in the 1660's show her love of plants and illustrations by Lady Diana Spencer, the society artist in the 1760's, are revealed in the 17 century painted glass window and beautiful floral panels in Lydiard House.

A replica of the original 18 century sundial forms the centre piece of the walled garden.
