About

An Mowhay is a new holiday barn conversion, providing a cosy 2-bedroom holiday rental cottage in the tiny hamlet of Brane, right in the centre of the far tip of West Cornwall. It's at the end of a 1-mile cul de sac, so there's no through traffic, yet it's only 15 minutes by car from Penzance.

Prices to: £475.00

Facilities & Information

The upper floor, a former hay loft, is now a large single room, comprising living and dining space and kitchen.  The kitchen is fully equipped, with fan and microwave ovens, electric hob, refrigerator, dishwasher, toaster, kettle, and of course all the necessary pots, pans, utensils, crockery and glassware for four people.

The living area is comfortably furnished with sofas and rugs on the polished wood floor, satellite TV, stereo, and multi-fuel stove.  A dining table and four chairs are provided.

Downstairs, you will find bedrooms and shower room.  The master bedroom has its own french windows to the sheltered patio area outside.  It has a king-size bed, plus drawer chest, bedside tables, and satellite TV.  There is a very large walk-in wardrobe, with storage for the patio furniture.  Next to it is the second bedroom, with bunk beds (80cm size) and wardrobe; this room would be ideal for two children but it is adequate for adults.  For safety reasons, we do not provide a cot, but there is room for a travel cot in either bedroom.

The house is heated by storage radiators, with additional panel heaters in the bedrooms and a multi-fuel stove upstairs.

The rental includes duvets, bedlinen and towels (with a weekly change for those staying 2 weeks or more), electricity, an initial basket of logs for the stove, and tea and biscuits on arrival.

Local Information

Easily reachable on foot:

10 mins: Brane Barrow A small Bronze Age burial chamber, this one is unusual in that, while the earth mound has been removed, the stonework is mostly complete.  NOTE - on private land, permission required from neighbouring farmer.

20 mins: Carn Euny A very complete Iron Age hilltop village, probably the original settlement of Brane.  Contains a mostly complete and fully accessible fougou (underground chamber).  English Heritage maintained but entry uncontrolled.

20 mins: Grumbla - regular buses to St Just (10 mins) and Penzance (20 mins)

30 mins: Caer Bran Iron Age hill fort

30 mins: Boscawen'un
A near perfect stone circle - and one of the least well known

45 mins: Chapel Carn Brea The first hill in Cornwall.  Panoramic views.  Site of ancient chapel, and also the site of revived Cornish midsummer ritual (June 24th)

45 mins: Sancreed Church and Holy Well The present church dates from the 13th-15th centuries but is said to be on the site of the Celtic chapel of St Credan (8th century).   Nearby is the holy well which is also said to have been dedicated to St Credan but is almost certainly of pre-Christian origin.

45 mins: St Buryan village Decent local pub (the nearest) with food, and two general stores.  Famous (or infamous, depending on where you live) as the location for the film Straw Dogs. (Check the photo of Dustin Hoffman in the bar.)

By car:

15 mins: St Just Everything you need, really: 5 pubs (count 'em), Co-op, bakers, butchers, post office (still), 2 takeaways and a cash point.

15 mins: St Buryan - see above

20 mins: Cape Cornwall Think: Lands End, but without the theme park.

25 mins: St Levan Pretty small rocky cove with nice sandy beach.  South facing. Bit of a scramble down from the car park.  No facilities
