Local Information

The Waverley – 7 days without your car

Day 1.     Walk The Waverley Way – Our very own walk starting and finishing at The Waverley. Take anything from 2 hours to all day to discover the sights, sounds and smells of Whitby. You will probably see things that you haven’t noticed before and learn more about some that you have. For example why does the man aloft in the crow’s nest near the Tourist Information Centre look as though he has just let go of 2 pints of beer? Was the yard off of Church Street really the site of so many disputes?

Day 2.     Take a bus to Robin Hood’s Bay or Runswick Bay and walk the 7 or so miles back into Whitby along the coastal path (or vice versa) – feeling energetic? Do both!! Enjoy the views from the bus which you would not normally get from your car.

Day 3.     Get a day ticket on the Steam Train to Pickering alighting at Grosmont and Goathland (Aidensfield from Heartbeat) on the way, if you are lucky they may even be filming in Goathland

Day 4.     Borrow our fossil hammer and spend a morning Fossil Hunting in Saltwick Bay (there are several organised fossil hunting trips throughout the year or you can go independently). Follow this with Fishing for half a day on an organised boat trip or from the seaward side on lower levels of the pier.

Day 5. Have a day out on the Moorsbus:

·         The Moors National Park Centre Danby, Helmsley, Hawnby

·         Cleveland Way Explorer tour & Sutton Bank National Park Centre

·         Rosedale Abbey & The Moors National Park Centre Danby

·         Rosedale Abbey & Pickering

·         Helmsley & Sutton Bank National Park Centre

·         The Moors National Park Centre Danby & Hutton le Hole

Day 6.     Hire a Bike for half a day or a day. Easy, traffic-free and safe cycling on the coastal trail is available to hirers starting from Trailways at Hawsker. The scenic trail runs along the route of the 20 mile, old Whitby to Scarborough railway line.

Day 7.     Take a bus ride to Eden Camp at Malton for a WWII experience.
