Additional Information

Kessingland Suffolk was once the richest village in England at the height of the herring fishing industry. Our ancestors worked in the fishing industry.

Now it is a medium sized village (population about 4000) and is known as a quiet seaside holiday destination, with a range of accommodation ranging from camping and caravans, to chalets, bungalows, houses and cottages holiday rentals.

Village shops and facilities include a Post Office, newsagent, chemist, petrol station and small supermarket. A major supermarket at Lowestoft is about a 3 mile drive away. There are fish and chip and Chinese takeaways, four pubs and two restaurants.

It is a short walk to the Waterfront Restaurant and the Sailors Home pub, serving local Ales and fresh food.

Seals are regularly seen on the beach and often porpoises and dolphins in the sea.

A walk of just over a mile along the sea wall will take you to the Benacre Nature Reserve with it's flora and fauna including Marsh Harriers. The Minsmere RSPB nature reserve, popular with bird watchers is about a 30 minute drive away.

There is sea fishing off the beach and coarse fishing in a local lake and the River Hundred.

Local Information

South of Kessingland the attractive town of Southwold has the attractions of a pier and picturesque harbour and also nearby, Walberswick village, famous for the World Crab Catching Championships.

Kessingland is a medium sized seaside village, 5 miles from Lowestoft. It has a sand and shingle beach, with safe bathing, perfect for children. Private access to the beach via a concrete ramp.
