Local Information

Aberdovey is set within Snowdonia National Park, an area of outstanding natural beauty, and is blessed with above-average sunshine hours and below average rainfall compared to the surrounding vicinity.  With 4½ miles of sandy beach, sailing, water sports, hill walking, cycling, mountain climbing and horse riding, amongst many other attractions, there is abundant opportunity for the family or golfing party to base itself in the village and enjoy all the amenities of the locality.

Aberdovey offers many places to eat, covering a broad spectrum of tastes from the fish and chip shop to the award-winning restaurant at The Penhelig Arms.  It is highly advisable to book a table as far in advance as possible as all the restaurants get very busy, particularly at weekends.

Cardigan Bay is part of the Irish Sea and its rich waters are home to Bottlenose dolphins, porpoises, grey seals and magnificent flocks of sea birds including Manx shearwaters and gannets.  Migratory birds such as terns and skuas also visit.

Centre for Alternative Technology (10 miles)
This is Europe's leading Eco-Centre and offers solutions to some of the most serious challenges facing our planet and the human race, such as climate change, pollution and the waste of precious resources. It demonstrates practical ways of addressing these problems. Leading by example, they aim to show that living more sustainably is not only easy to attain but can provide a better quality of life. They aim to address every aspect of the average lifestyle - the key areas worked in are renewable energy, environmental building, energy efficiency, organic growing and alternative sewage systems.

The seven-acre display site includes exciting interactive displays that demonstrate the incredible power of wind, water and sun and has working examples of environmentally responsible buildings, energy conservation, organic growing and composting.  See leaflet for further details.

Mountain Biking, Machynlleth (10 miles)
Waymarked routes of varying length and difficulty take you straight from the centre of town into fantastic mountain and valley scenery.  With everything from mixed road and valley trails to long forestry climbs, traversing mountain singletrack and sketchy slate ravine descents on the longer routes there's something for every level of rider.  The Dyfi forest to the north of the town offers excellent forestry free-riding too.  See Snowdonia Mountains & Coast brochure for further details.

Madian Quad Biking (14 miles)
Take any of the treks and you will travel down green lanes, retracing ancient routes that were lifelines for travellers.  These little used routes offer quad-bikers a rare and privileged opportunity to see breathtaking and beautiful areas that nobody but the intrepid hill walker and farmers are likely to share.

Several treks on Honda bikes are on offer, catering for complete novices and experienced 4x4 drivers alike.  The experience is unique and satisfaction is guaranteed.  The treks include all safety equipment and waterproof clothing.

Talyllyn Railway (4 miles)
The Talyllyn Railway is a historic narrow-gauge steam railway, set in the beautiful Mid-Wales countryside. Running from Tywyn to Abergynolwyn and Nant Gwernol, the line passes the delightful Dolgoch Falls and there are excellent forest walks at Nant Gwernol.

King Arthur's Labyrinth and Corris Craft Centre (15 miles)
King Arthur's Labyrinth is an exciting visitor attraction in which an underground boat will take you magically through a waterfall and deep into the spectacular caverns under the Braichgoch mountain.

On the same site is Corris Craft Centre, comprising ten individual and very different craft workshops each housing talented Crafters producing a range of hand-crafted and unique products.  Choose from unique Celtic and contemporary jewellery, leatherwork, hand carved candles, traditional wooden toys, ceramics and pottery, quilting and patchwork, hand-blown glass, rustic furniture, hand-made designer cards and turned wood.  Visitors to the Craft Centre will see the Crafters at work and can buy directly from them.  The perfect place for very special, yet slightly unusual, items for your home and gifts for others.

There is also a café and children's play area on site.

RSPB Wales - Ynys-hir (16 miles)
Welsh woodlands are a fantastic place to visit all the year round, but spring and summer months provide a real spectacle for birdwatchers. Many migratory birds arrive at the start of the breeding season to build their nests and feed their young on the varied woodland menu. RSPB Cymru carefully manages a number of reserves where woodland comprises some or all of the entire available habitat.

Abergwynant Farm & Pony Trekking Centre, Dolgellau (25 miles)
At Abergwynant there are over 60 horses which are kept mainly for trekking.  The treks are available every day and usually last for two hours, over several different routes.  Some pass derelict gold mines and journey by the side of sparkling rivers, traversing the foothills of the famous Cader Idris mountain.  Others follow traditional paths through the lovely Forestry overlooking the picturesque estuary.

Golf Courses
Situated between the coastal dunes of Aberdovey beach and the Cambrian Mountains lies Aberdovey golf course.  This 6,454 yard challenge is a hidden gem of a traditional seaside links course.  Over the years the Club's 18 holes, which are steeped in over 100 years of golfing history, have hosted many championships including more recently the British Ladies' Home Internationals and the regular home of the Welsh Seniors' Championship.
