There is so much to see and do around East Bergholt and slightly further a field, perfect for all the family, of all ages.
The church of St Mary sits proudly in East Bergholt, with its pretty tower and clerestory, and spectacular flint flushwork, stands as a beacon on the Suffolk/Essex border. A beautiful monument dating back to the fifteenth century, sitting alongside the River Stour is a definite to visit to learn of some of the history surrounding East Bergholt.
The beauty of this magnificent church is not the only thing to see when visiting, the church is also home to ‘The Bell Cage’ a temporary measure erected in 1531 when work ceased to be successful of building a bell tower back in 1525, the bells are still rung on a Wednesday Evening and on Sunday mornings; and although there are other ‘Bell Cages’ this one is the only one who’s bells are swung by full force of hand and not by rope and wheel in Britain.
For golf enthusiasts, Brett Vale Golf Club is just 3 miles away from East Bergholt situated in the ‘constable country’. With an 18 hole course, a clubhouse, bar & restaurant, practice range, putting green and 2 chipping greens it is easy to spend all day here.
