Local Information

The cottage is situated in the hamlet of Lowick Green, which is part of the civil parish of Lowick. The village is recorded as early as 1202 and the name Lowick believed derived from norse language "Lauf-vik", which means Leafy Bay.

Set in the beautiful Crake Valley, which follows the River Crake from the southern tip of Coniston water, the backdrop to the cottage is provided by the majestic Coniston Fells dominated by the Old Man of Coniston 2634 ft, Dow Crag 2552 ft and Wetherlam 2503 ft. Surrounded by farms and fells, Lowick is a typical Lake District village and hosts its own agricultural show on the first Saturday in September.

This is walking country par excellance with Wainwrights aplenty and some great local history too. This is Swallows and Amazons country, the book by Arthur Ransome being based around his holiday adventures in the Coniston area and Consiton Water. For a time Arthur Ransome lived in Lowick and drank at the Red Lion pub, just a mile down the road from Corner Cottage.

This is also John Ruskin, Beatrix Potter and William Worsdsworth country too.

There is much to do in the area, whether your interests are walking, cycling, climbing, horse riding or simply relaxing. For shopping, the lovely market town of Ulverston is just 5 miles away and further afield Barrow-In-Furness provides some modern retail parks.

There are 3 pubs, all serving food, within 1 mile of the cottage. One of them the Farmers Arms is just five minutes walk away and the Royal Oak just ten minutes away.

Locally, horse-riding, pony trekking, quad biking and go-ape are all catered for. Check out the things to do section of oure website for more information.
